California’s SB 808 is a proposed bill that, if passed, will grant local school districts the sole power to reject a charter school petition and take away a charter school’s ability to appeal such a decision. Proponents of SB 808 believe that it will help to ease the financial burden on the Los Angeles Unifed School District, as it may guide more students back into traditional schools. Opponents of SB 808 fear that it will give the school district the power to shut down any charter school, even high-performing schools.
